The
car was purchased complete, less body from a racer in the US. I
had a 1974 Chevrolet Vega body made for me in New York and trucked
over to California were I spent two weeks setting it up for me working
with a few local racers and the team I bought the car from.
I crewed on the car at its final race meeting to learn as much as
possible and make the vital contacts that I knew would be necessary
to successfully run a car on Nitro in a remote country such as New
Zealand.
It was extremely competitive finishing the season third in the Goodguys
VRA Championship and proved to be the most reliable in the field,
running consistent mid six second passes at 220 mph.
This was obviously a major incentive for me as if we run the car
to their specifications we stand a good possibility of enjoying
the same reliability. Although we have already established that
my right foot is heavier that the last driver, call it inexperience.
I bought two motors complete, the one we run presently which is
classified as the “learner” and the race motor that
will go in once we tame the beast a little. We also have a third
on hand for public displays and start ups etc. Along with a truckload
of spares.
I am fully confident that the package we have put together, the
contacts we have made, the experienced crew we have assembled and
the support of many friends and businesses gives us the best possible
chance of achieving our goal of providing a high standard of entertainment
in the sport of Drag Racing. Our aim is to travel extensively (as
finances allow) to share the excitement that nitro racing delivers
with as many people as possible.
